You don’t have to be a jerk.

Posted: under Observations, Shazzbot!.

Last Friday I took the kids to the library to get some books, I picked out two, Ashlee picked out two and my son of course wanted none. We go to check them out and the lady tells me I can’t because my account is blocked. She says I checked out “skunks and their relatives” (a book for my son) in AUGUST of LAST year and never returned it. She says I was billed (never ever received one bill) and that I’ll have to wait to speak to the coordinator. I ask if the woman will call me, she tells me yes. At this point my daughter checks out my books for me and then tells me she wants to go look on the shelf because we know we returned the book. (I’m anal about library books, the must remain on the kitchen bar unless you are reading them and the slip of paper that tells when they are due back lives on the refrigerator.) But we leave anyway.

Monday I call anyway because I don’t like having stuff like this just “out there”. Once again I’m told I checked out this book and I have fees to pay. But finally this woman tells me that the coordinator won’t be back from vacation until Wednesday, and she’ll definitely call me.

Wednesday goes by, its around 4:30 pm and I call again since I have not gotten any phone calls. This lady tells me I’ll have to pay 15.95 for the book along with some processing fees. I tell her, there is no way I am paying for anything since I know I returned the book, she tells me that the coordinator is at lunch and she will call me.

7:30ish, this woman calls me and says, “Hi, is this Amy? I just wanted to call you to tell you that we found the book on the shelf, your account is unblocked and there are no fees.” “I’m sorry about the confusion.” She didn’t even sound sincere or sorry about anything.

Not one time were these people nice to me. Not one time did they actually look like they gave a shit about me. I understand people tell them all the time they returned stuff, but that doesn’t make it ok to automatically doubt every person. There is nothing she can do to make it better, where as my husband would at least give the person a credit. See he too hears the “I swear I returned that” but he doesn’t act like an asshole.

A book from a YEAR ago and they just now found it! Complete bullshit. Billed me or contacted me not one time… but somehow I was responsible. Not to mention I checked out books 4 months ago and no one said a friggin word then. Screw them.

Our Library never has the books I want anyway… I’ll just take Ashlee there for books from now on and find a good second hand store for myself.
